From Havana to Untersiggenthal

Raúl Pellicier Villafaña was born in Havana in 1974, at a time when Cuban artists were breaking away from traditional art and turning to more experimental forms of expression. As a teenager he immersed himself in what became known as Nuevo Arte Cubano, studying under the renowned painter and caricaturist Cecilio Avilés at the Instituto Superior de Arte. In the 1990s he took part in Proyecto Prado, a platform for young Cuban artists, where he met many of the talents he would work with in the years that followed.

After several exhibitions in Havana, he moved to Switzerland in 2010 and showed his work in Zurich at the Rote Fabrik and the “Arte Cubano” gallery. He then spent several years in Singapore, collaborating with Artitude Gallery, with exhibitions at The Fullerton Hotel and in Tokyo.

Since 2020 Raúl has lived and worked in his own studio in Untersiggenthal, Switzerland. His work has since been shown at Galerie im Gwölb in Baden, at Studio Gallery Mallorca and at the LUX Summit in Barcelona, among other places.

Raúl works with oil, acrylic, resin and wood. He is known for flowing, luminous color combinations – especially in his works about water – and for the strikingly real three-dimensional effects he achieves with resin.
